Why get involved?

Acting on climate change is in our collective interest - individually, as businesses and as a profession - and will enable us to:

Reduce costs - Significant financial savings can be made with little or no expenditure by adopting environmentally sustainable practices.

Win new business - Increasing numbers of clients are requesting information on environmental policies and practices when appointing legal advisers and, according to the Carbon Trust, two thirds of consumers are more likely to buy products and services with a small carbon footprint.

Recruit and retain talent - Environmental responsibility is a determining factor in employee recruitment, retention and engagement rates. Recent CIPD research found that more than 50% of people would prefer to work for a company with a strong environmental policy.

Anticipate regulation - The failure of the market to prevent climate change will almost certainly result in increased taxation and regulation with direct financial liability for those businesses exceeding their limits.

Limit damage to physical assets - The consequences of inaction are that extreme weather conditions will lead to costly repairs, disruptions to infrastructure and increased insurance premiums.

Why should my firm join the LSA?

We firmly believe that acting on climate change is our collective interest and that greater impact can be achieved through collaborative action and the sharing of knowledge and experience than can be achieved individually.

The greater the number of firms, chambers and in-house legal teams that get involved, the greater our chance of having a real influence on the way the sector does business.

Joining the LSA offers members:

- use of the Legal Sector Alliance logo to show commitment to taking action
- access to knowledge and to networks within the sector and regionally
- access to materials and resources to support action on climate change
- the opportunity to collaborate on joint initiatives
- support in developing and implementing an environmental strategy
- opportunities to communicate commitment to acting on climate change to key audiences, including employees and clients
- profiling through case studies, on the website and on other platforms

Here’s what members say:

"By being a member of the LSA, law firms have a platform to share ideas, initiatives and experiences in taking action against climate change"
Irving Watson, director of business process, Linklaters

"More so than ever, existing and potential clients are examining our environmental credentials....an inclusive sectoral approach that seeks to embrace in-house teams as well as their external advisers is an easy sell"
Andrew Whitehead, senior partner, Martineau

Join the LSA

Law firms, in-house legal departments and chambers are invited to become members of the LSA by committing to its principles and taking action on climate change.

As signatories, members commit to adopting the LSA principles and taking action on each of them (or explain why it is impossible for them to do so) and will be asked to report back to the LSA on the action they have taken at the end of each year using a simple pro forma. While information about individual members will not be published externally without prior consent, it will be used to compile a collective Legal Sector Alliance progress report.

To join the LSA, please complete the form below in full providing details for both a main contact and a senior contact.

The main contact will be notified of any information relating to membership of the Legal Sector Alliance such as the development of tools and resources, and regional events.

The senior contact must be a Partner or equivalent with the authority to commit to the principles on behalf of the organisation. They will only be contacted for the purposes of verifying this commitment.

This email will be used to contact you only in relation to your membership of the LSA.
This email will only be used for verification of this application.

Once submitted, a verification email will be sent to the senior contact asking them to confirm the application by clicking a link. You may want to make sure that they are briefed to expect the email. On completion of this process, the name of your organisation will be published on the Members page.
